Kevork Mourad, an artist of Armenian heritage born in Syria in 1970, combines painting with performance art in a series of distinctive and expressive works that converge art, music and performance. Mourad’s defining style and technique is “spontaneous painting”, which involves creating paintings that are in concord with music.
Mourad, who grew up as a descendent of Armenian refugees in Syria, collaborates with musical groups and orchestrates live visual performances, his works often corresponding line by line to a musical performance. His unique style gives importance to the process of creating an artwork rather than simply the product of the process each participant and onlooker is involved in the process. Having a series of performers initiate a series of events leads to an experience that is both collective and individual.
Mourad, who received his Masters in Fine Arts from the Yerevan Institute of Fine Arts in Armenia, has collaborated with clarinettist and composer Kinan Azmeh, Brooklyn Rider, Ken Ueno, Liubo Borissov, Haruka Fuji and Yo-Yo Ma. He has also performed at the Rhode Island School of Design, the Chelsea Museum of Art, Nara Museum in Japan and the Brooklyn Museum of Art.
